What we're doing
In summer 2026/27, we'll be carrying out a resilience project on Bruce Avenue, Glenview, to help protect nearby residents and the environment if there is an outage at the local wastewater pump station.
The project involves constructing emergency wastewater storage tanks on council-owned land adjacent to the pump station. The tanks will provide temporary storage if there is a power failure or other operational issue, giving crews time to respond and complete repairs before wastewater can overflow from the network.
Most of the time the tanks will remain empty and will only be used during emergency situations.

Once construction is complete, the site and surrounding area will be reinstated, including re-grassing and landscaping where required.
Why we're doing it
This project will improve the resilience of the wastewater network and help protect surrounding properties and the local environment.
Because wastewater pump stations are generally located within residential communities, emergency storage tanks need to be located close to the pump station they support. The additional storage capacity will help reduce the risk of wastewater overflows and support compliance with technical and environmental standards.
Hamilton City Council has successfully delivered similar resilience projects at:
- River Road (south of Fairfield Bridge), opposite Riverview Terrace
- Sycamore Place, Pukete

Hamilton City Council
Hamilton City Council is the owner of the land associated with the project.

FAQs
Emergency storage tanks temporarily hold wastewater during an unexpected outage at a pump station. This provides time for crews to restore operations before wastewater can overflow from the network.
No. Most of the time the tanks will remain empty and will only be used during emergency situations.
We don’t expect any odour issues due to these works. The storage pipe is connected to the existing wastewater pump station, like the current pipe network is. Odour controls for the existing pump station will be assessed and upgraded if needed during these works. The pipes and tanks will only be used if there’s a pump blockage or loss of power to the pump station - most of the time the emergency storage pipes and tanks will be empty.
The tanks need to be located close to the wastewater pump station they support so they can provide effective emergency storage capacity.
Construction will involve excavating the site, installing prefabricated tanks and associated pipework, connecting the tanks to the wastewater network, and reinstating the site following completion.
Any large construction works in the road may cause vibration at times. The level will depend on the type of work and the soil type in the area. Before we start we’ll visit nearby homeowners and do an assessment of properties to identify any issues which may arise from the works.
Yes. We will maintain access at all times when we are not on site. At times during the work we may need to restrict access for safety as machinery moves about.
Works are expected to take approximately four to five months, weather permitting.
The project team will communicate directly with residents, nearby property owners, Glenview School and other affected stakeholders before and during construction.
